Not just taking on the role of a man, but actually looking like one would have sky rocketed the disguised woman’s social standing instantly, just because of the gender she was ‘performing’. It could have even been a way for a woman to garner power which she would not have been able to experience as a woman. Or, it could be argued that they did it in order to have a suitable disguise because they were criminals. I’d like to believe that at least some of these individuals did it because they were actually lesbians and wanted to be protected from the utter prejudice and humiliation that would unfold (think ‘Elisa & Marcela’ on Netflix- really good, give it a watch!). We can only really speculate the true reasons behind doing this. For example, Mary Hamilton (alias Charles Hamilton) married fourteen women! Hamilton’s fourteenth wife, Mary Price testified that, ‘they bedded and lived together as man and wife’. There has been a great deal of speculation as to why these women would have taken such a risk, the general consensus is that it was because of one of three reasons ‘caprice, criminal reasons or as a screen to shield them from vile and execrable actions’. These individuals were called ‘husband-wives’. The wives then went on to say that they had no idea their husband was in fact female and were completely shocked. Interestingly enough, there were a few same sex marriages which took place in Georgian England. From the few existing diaries available, it is clear that lesbians of the period didn’t have much of a problem with their own identity, and the knowledge that there were other women who had the same feelings probably acted as a great comfort to them. As a result, during the eighteenth-century, the idea of same sex romantic friendship was reluctantly accepted. During this period, same sex female attraction or contact was not a criminal offence, as it was with homosexuality. The word ‘lesbian’ came about during the twentieth century and ‘female homosexuals’ was first used in 1869.
